When setting up your class, it's best to work within the school's enterprise account. This helps keep your personal account separate and reduces confusion. All of the instructions in this and following topics assumes you are signed in to your enterprise account.

Setting up your classCopy link

The major steps to setting up a class to use Onshape are listed below and explained under their own headings following:

  1. Add students to the enterprise account. Each student is a member of the enterprise and has individual sign-in credentials.

  2. Create folders with which to organize class content and assignments.

  3. Create teams of students. Teams are an efficient way to assign permissions, share documents, and organize students into classes.

Adding studentsCopy link

Adding students to your enterprise is done through the Enterprise settings for your account, through a CSV (comma-separated) file:

  1. Access your Enterprise settings.

  2. Select the Users tab.

  3. Click Import from CSV.

  4. When the dialog opens, click Download CSV template.

  5. Open the file that downloads and enter your student information, according to the columns:

    Keeping the column headers as is: enter the student emails in column A, their role of 'member' in column B, assign a team if you have that information ready (or defer now and follow instructions below to assign teams later), assign a type of 'Full' in column D, and 'no' in the Guest column.

  6. Save the spreadsheet, export it as a CSV file.

  7. In the same dialog box in Onshape, click Choose file and select the CSV file you just exported.

  8. Click Import to upload the CSV file and add the users specified within it.

Members added to EDU Enterprise automatically get an Onshape Education subscription.

Light users cannot be added as students, since they cannot use applications that are added to an Onshape account.

Creating teams of students

To create teams, start on the Enterprise settings page of your Onshape enterprise account:

  1. In the left panel, click Teams.

  2. On the Teams page on the right, click Create Team.

  3. Enter a name for the Team, perhaps the name of the class of students, and a description.

  4. Click Save.

  5. For newly created teams, add users by clicking the Add users button when the dialog (above) closes.

  6. In the field that appears, start typing students email addresses to enter all the students to be part of the team. Note that you must have completed adding your students as Onshape users in the enterprise before this step.

  7. Once all emails have been entered for the team, click Save.

Distributing assignmentsCopy link

You can load any kind of document into Onshape, like class assignments and instructions, in any file format. These files can be imported into an Onshape document, where users who have permissions to access them can view them. An Onshape document might also contain a model for the students to edit as part of their assignment. Organizing materials into folders helps with organizing and sharing materials. Then you can share the appropriate folder to the appropriate team of students.

Creating folders for Onshape documents, materials, and assignments

To create a folder, start on the Documents page in your Onshape enterprise:

  1. Click Create > Folder.

  2. Name the folder and click Create.

  3. The folder is visible on the Documents page, in the list.

  4. To put resources into a folder, you can do one of the following:

    • Have the folder open on the Documents page before you create any Onshape documents. Onshape documents created while a folder is open are automatically added to that folder.

    • On the Documents page, click and drag a document from the list onto the folder in the list.

    • Right-click on the Document, select Move to, and then the location you wish to move it to. Click Move here to complete the action.

When sharing folders with their associated documents (including other materials stored in the documents), you can select from different share options:

  • To individual students

  • To a team of students

  • Through link sharing - Sharing a document through a link allows anyone with the link to view the Onshape document and its assorted resources (models, files, etc) without being able to change anything or make a copy

The permissions you can assign through Sharing are:

  • Can edit - The user can make changes to the document

  • Can view - The user can only view the document, not make any changes

In addition to the two basic permissions (above), you can also select from the following permissions:

  • Copy – The user can make a copy of the document that they can then edit

  • Link document – The user can link to the document and use it in other documents.

  • Export – The user can export the document

  • Share – The user can share the document with others

  • Comment – The user can add comments in the document

  • Delete – The user can delete the document - Warning: this option is not recommended for students since they could delete a document that has been shared by the teacher.

Students can make a copy of assigned documents shared by the teacher (recommended) and add their name to the new copy’s document name so they can work separately from other students.

As noted earlier, when sharing documents with students it is more efficient to share with an entire team (or many teams) at once, versus sharing with individual students. In addition, instead of sharing each individual document, create folders for documents, then share the folder in which the documents reside.

Receiving student workCopy link

When the student has finished the assignment, it’s a good idea to then create a version of the document.

A version includes everything that the document contains at that point in time (Part Studios, Assemblies, images, pdfs, etc.).

To create a version of a document:

  1. With the document open, click the Create a version Create version icon icon:

  2. In the dialog that appears, provide a meaningful name and description for the version. Providing a meaningful name aids in recognizing what the version contains at a later date.

  3. Click Create.

After the version has been created, the student can continue working on the document without having to worry about ruining the created version or their work for that assignment. Anyone can create as many versions of a document as desired.

To submit work, students can either share the document with the teacher or add a comment to the document. Adding a comment to the document sends the teacher a notification that the assignment is ready to be evaluated. Simply tag the teacher’s name in the comment (@name-of-the-teacher).

Special considerations

Students might need to use link sharing if the teacher/professor does not have an Onshape account or if your school is using a learning management system (LMS) as a grading tool.

When using comments, you can assign the comment to another user tagged in the comment by checking the box for Assign. This works only when using the tag ( @name_of_person):

Evaluating student performanceCopy link

When evaluating a student's work you might need to see if the student cheated, how much time was spent working on the assignment, and other criteria. For this you can use the document history or the analytics feature available in the EDU Enterprise plan.

To see the document history, simply go to the Manage versions and history flyout Versions and history flyout icon and click the Show changes arrow next to the appropriate workspace. You will then be able to see all the actions taken for the workspace you are evaluating (sketching, extrude, revolve, delete, copy etc.).

To use the Analytics feature, go to the Analytics tab from the top menu:
