External Thread
Create ANSI and ISO standard threads on convex cylindrical faces, like shafts and bolts. Threads appear as dashed lines at the top of the cylindrical face in drawings.
The External thread feature allows you to create ANSI and ISO standard threads on convex cylindrical faces, like shafts and bolts, which can then be viewed in drawings.
Click the External thread tool on the Part Studio toolbar. Select the Cylinder edges of either the shafts or other convex cylindrical faces in the graphics area. Note that you can select multiple edges at once if they are the same size. For different sizes, create additional External thread features.
Select a standard: ANSI or ISO. The Size is automatically selected based on the standard selected and the cylinder diameter. If you change the standard, you must manually select a size in order for the automatic sizing to be provided. Select the number of threads per inch (for ANSI standard) or Pitch (for ISO standard).
Select either Blind (extend the threads to the Length specification) or Up to Next (extend the threads to the next Face).
Check Add Chamfer to add an optional chamfer at the top of the thread. Specify the Length and Angle for the chamfer.
Check Add undercut to add an optional undercut at the bottom of the thread. Specify the Diameter and Length of the undercut. Alternatively, instead of opting for an Undercut, you can split the face (default), or uncheck to keep the face intact.
Click the checkmark to accept the new External thread.

- Select either Blind (extend the threads to the Length specification) or Up to Next (extend the threads to the next Face).
- Add an optional Chamfer at the top of the thread:
- Check the box next to Add chamfer.
- Specify the distance of the chamfer, how far down the shaft from the surface.
- Specify the angle of the chamfer.
- Add an optional Undercut at the bottom of the shaft.
Undercut diameters default to 0.015" diametrically below the minor diameter. The length defaults to 2X the pitch of the thread. These measurements autosize with different thread/pitch combinations.
- Add an optional split face, if needed (not available when Undercut is selected).
